4G is the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards. It is viewed by Scott Snyder, author of The New Worlds of Wireless, as a disruptive technology that will change the business models of many industries. Few companies, he concludes, have yet to understand the implications. This book is a systematic analytical guide for what the author sees as a far-reaching technological and organizational revolution.
The increased volume and speed of communication has created a "digital swarm," presenting challenges on how to cope with and use the input. The individual wireless operator, using a handset device, will have increased power outside of the traditional structures and hierarchies. "Killer bees" are seen as the greatest threat; these are more easily spread viruses, and more destructive terrorists. 4G technology offers new avenues of opportunity for businesses—and the possibility of increased volatility in social, political, and financial interactions. Snyder's central message is to anticipate, not just react.
