Blogs for the BuysideAre you tired of the simple sound bites you hear on the Bloomberg regarding issues as dense and esoteric as central banks and currencies? Do you need some extra analysis from someone who has studied both different countries as well as different eras of U.S. economic history? Check out Edward Harrison's Creditwritedowns.com.

In quick, short posts, Harrison gets away from the shortsightedness of the mainstream media and looks at the underlying arguments of all of the major economic theorists and practitioners that make the headlines these days.   Think you know Reagonomics?
Not until you read this post by Harrison.

Think you understand Milton Friedman and the underpinnings of the monetarists?
Not until you read this post by Harrison.

Tired of hearing these sycophantic interviews of the more famous money managers like Jeremy Grantham?
Read the post Harrison gives around this particular interview of Grantham on CNBC.  Harrison, while agreeing with Grantham on a lot of his points, adds context to Grantham by offering additional data and analysis to his readers.

Like all great bloggers, Harrison has been able to attract like-minded people to contribute to "Credit Writedowns."  My favorite contributer of his is Marc Chandler, Global Head of Currency Strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co.  Chandler, a currency strategist, gives short-term commentary on the currency market that also gives insight into broader economic trends. Check out this piece on the ECB & Greece. This is not just the typical buy on support/sell on peak pieces that we are inundated with in the mainstream media.  He gets economics and offers ideas on how those economies will impact currencies.

If I was forced to give a criticism I would point to the comments.  For some reason "Credit Writedowns" does not get substantial traffic and so the comments are often sparse.

–Aram Fuchs, General Partner, Fertilemind Capital is captivated by the ability of blogs to change buyside research. He founded a website called Capitalist Collective. He is hiring two analysts from the best stock pickers on the site and he is hosting a conference called The Capitalist Collective Stock Picking Festival, which is sponsored by the NYSSA and it will be hosted at our offices on September 9, 2011.
