NYSSA Announces December 2012 CFA Scholarship Winners

The New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) is pleased to announce the winners of the December 2012 CFA Exam Scholarship Program. NYSSA offers up to five scholarships in both the fall and spring to New York–area CFA candidates. Recipients are selected based on experience and/or interest in the investment profession, ethical standards, and commitment to NYSSA and CFA Institute. Scholarship winners receive discounted registration fees and free NYSSA CFA weekly review.
Nell Derick Debevoise is the founder of Inspiring Capital LLC, which uses practical experience, insightful analysis, and diverse theoretical perspectives to help develop, fund, and launch socially-minded ventures. This approach, combined with Debevoise’s extensive global network, applies business and finance strategies to enable innovative and sustainable development in poor communities. Earning the CFA Charter will complete her training and experience to expertly advise investors as well as entrepreneurs to best use capital to achieve their shared goals. Before establishing Inspiring Capital, Debevoise completed the Global Executive MBA program at Columbia and London Business Schools. At Columbia, she sat on the board of the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics. She will begin a three-year term as president of the London Business School Alumni Club of New York in September 2012. From 2007–2012, Debevoise was the founding director of Tomorrow's Youth Organization (TYO), a nonprofit that promotes social and economic development through programs for children and women in the Middle East. Debevoise earned her undergraduate degree in psychology at Harvard College and two master's degrees in education policy and theory at Cambridge in the UK and the Università di Roma.
Bernadette Kilroy, PhD is currently president and founder of Alpha Edge Global Advisors, LLC. Previously she was vice president of Research and Trading at Clarium Capital Management LLC. Before joining the finance industry, she was a member of the Policy Planning Staff at the US Department of State and a senior staffer on the US Senate Committee on the budget. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and has taught at UCLA and George Washington University. She is pursuing the CFA Charter in order to deepen her finance expertise.
Delfin Rodriguez graduated magna cum laude from NYU Stern School of Business, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance, and from NYU School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. Rodriguez currently works as a regulatory officer at the New Jersey Bureau of Securities, where he, among other things, investigates potential violations of the New Jersey Uniform Securities Law and reviews securities registration applications. Previously, Rodriguez worked as an associate at Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP. When asked about his decision to pursue the CFA charter, he responded, "I am pursuing the CFA designation because I believe that the training provided by the CFA curriculum will improve my understanding of financial markets, products, and best practices for ethical conduct within the profession."
Priyadarshini Roy graduated from Jadavpur University in 2006 with a BA in Economics. Upon completion of the MSc in Economics program at the University of Warwick in 2007, she joined Kinetic Partners, an asset management consulting firm. She has worked on numerous projects in global tax efficient restructuring, tax compliance, and transfer pricing for hedge fund and private equity clients. In 2010, she qualified as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) in the UK. Since transferring from Kinetic’s London office to the New York practice in 2011, she has been helping investment managers understand and comply with the requirements of the Dodd-Frank Act and Investment Adviser’s Act. “The CFA Charter will help me to achieve mastery of financial concepts, which will assist in my understanding of financial regulations, and enable me to provide quality service to my clients. I want to be viewed as someone who is serious and passionate about the investment profession, and achieving the CFA designation, the gold standard among finance professionals, is the best way to accomplish this goal,” she said. In the future, as a member of the NYSSA and CFA Institute, she wishes to be instrumental in shaping the future of the investment profession by helping the financial network stay up to speed with industry knowledge, through articles and presentations for publications, webcasts, and courses.
Aksinya Sorokina graduated with honors from the State University of Management in Moscow where she studied Economics. During her pursuit of her undergraduate degree Sorokina worked in finance at IBM East Europe/Asia. She became a finalist of several business competitions and received the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) scholarship for studies in Munich. Later she passed through the Graduate Development Program at ING Bank while working in Credit Analysis/Relationship Management and also had short-term assignments in Risk Management, Debt Capital Markets and Sales/Trading. In 2011 she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and started her master’s degree in Economics & Finance at New York University. During the summer she’s interning in the World Economic Forum and Alternative Asset Investment Management Securities. "[The] CFA designation is professional proof of the ability to get over a complex challenge...It opens new career and networking opportunities in the global financial industry," she said.
